Essential WordPress SEO settings without the bloat

The SEO module adds a sidebar meta box to every post with a title, description, OG title/description and a live character counter. Global settings cover the default OG image, the title tag separator, and a warning if the site has search engine visibility discouraged.

Key features

  • Sidebar meta box in the editor — title, description, OG title, OG description
  • Character counters for the title (60) and description (160), same in the global settings
  • Global default meta description and default OG image (media library picker)
  • Configurable title tag separator (–, |, •...)
  • Warning when WordPress has "Discourage search engines from indexing this site" enabled
  • Automatically goes dormant when Yoast SEO or Rank Math is active

How it works

The title tag is assembled through the `document_title_parts` filter, not by echoing a raw `<title>` tag — this avoids a duplicate title tag even if the theme also outputs one.

On boot, the module checks `defined('RANK_MATH_VERSION')` and `class_exists('WPSEO_Options')` — if either plugin is active, SMRK Toolkit doesn’t register its SEO output at all, avoiding duplicated meta tags.

Compared to alternatives

A companion or alternative to Rank Math and Yoast SEO for smaller sites that don’t need XML sitemaps, a schema builder or dozens of extra features.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I have Rank Math active?
The SMRK Toolkit SEO module automatically goes dormant and renders nothing, avoiding meta tag collisions.
Can the module generate an XML sitemap?
No — the goal is a lightweight replacement for title/description/OG, not a full SEO suite.
How do I set a default OG image?
Pick an image from the media library in the module’s global settings — it’s used everywhere a specific post doesn’t define its own OG image.
