Media Folders

Folders for your Media Library — inside any image picker, not just the main screen

Media Folders adds a real folder tree to the Media Library — not just tags — with "All" and "Uncategorized" counts, drag-and-drop assignment onto a folder, and grid filtering by clicking a folder. The same tree also renders inside every single media-picker popup in wp-admin, not just the main Media Library screen.

Key features

  • A real folder tree — create, rename, delete, no plain tags pretending to be folders
  • "All" and "Uncategorized" views with a file count on every entry
  • Drag and drop a file straight onto a folder to assign it
  • Clicking a folder filters the media grid instantly
  • Works inside a plain ACF image field, the featured-image picker, the Customizer or widgets — anywhere WordPress opens a media picker
  • The folder tree renders right inside the picker popup, not just on the main Media Library screen

How it works

Folders and file assignments live in two dedicated database tables (not a WordPress taxonomy) — grid filtering then runs through a plain post__in on a standard WP_Query, not an extra custom SQL JOIN.

Rendering the tree inside any popup required hooking directly into wp_enqueue_media rather than the fragile, plugin-load-order-dependent admin_enqueue_scripts. The module also wraps the wp.media JS factory function to inject the folder sidebar into whichever Backbone AttachmentsBrowser view is currently active — which is why the tree works identically inside an ACF field, the featured-image picker, and the classic editor.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work inside an ACF image field, not just the Media Library page?
Yes — that’s the main difference from similar plugins. The folder tree shows up inside every media picker popup in wp-admin.
Is it a real hierarchy, or just extra tags?
A real folder tree — a file always belongs to one specific folder, not an arbitrary number of tags.
What happens to files not assigned to any folder?
They stay visible under "Uncategorized" — nothing gets hidden or lost.
