Backup

One-click WordPress database export and import

Backup can manually export and re-import your WordPress database with one click at any time, and also creates automatic daily backups on its own via WP-Cron. It backs up the database only — not site files or media.

Key features

  • Manual backup from the admin, one click, any time
  • Automatic daily backups via native WP-Cron
  • A configurable retention count for automatic backups — older ones are auto-pruned, manual backups are never deleted
  • Every backup file gets a random, unguessable name and sits in a folder protected by .htaccess and an index.php stub
  • Downloads and restores only ever go through an authenticated admin-only handler, never a guessable public URL
  • Restoring a backup first automatically creates a safety-net backup of the current database state, before overwriting anything
  • Export and import stream the data row by row/chunk by chunk instead of building one giant string in memory — holds up on larger databases without hitting PHP’s memory limit

How it works

Export walks the database tables and writes SQL statements to the file incrementally, in chunks, rather than assembling one huge string in memory — which is why it holds up even on databases that would otherwise blow past PHP’s memory limit.

The backup file is stored in the uploads directory under a random filename, and the folder is further protected by .htaccess plus an empty index.php, so direct outside access to the file isn’t possible — downloads and restores only ever go through the module’s own authenticated admin handler. A restore also always creates a fresh backup of the current database state first, so even a wrong restore can be undone.

Compared to alternatives

Backup is deliberately narrower than UpdraftPlus, BackWPup, Duplicator or All-in-One WP Migration — database only, no file backup, no cloud storage integrations — for anyone who just wants a fast one-click database snapshot without a heavier full-site backup tool.

Frequently asked questions

Does this back up files and uploaded media too?
No, it backs up the database only. Files and media need a separate backup.
What if a restore goes wrong or I restore the wrong backup?
A backup of the current database state is created automatically before every restore, so you can undo it.
Are backup files available at a public URL?
No, files have a random name and sit in a protected folder — downloads and restores only work for a logged-in administrator.
